Grok as a product is primarily chatbot – similar to ChatGPT or Google Bard – which can conduct dialogue, answer questions, help with coding, create texts and even generate images. It is large language model (LLM) trained on large data sets. Since its launch for a limited number of users in November 2023, Grok has been rapidly evolving and integrating new capabilities. An early version of Grok achieved performance comparable to GPT-3.5 (the model in the free version of ChatGPT)​

Grok is therefore a cutting-edge AI system similar to ChatGPT, but with a different philosophy (emphasizing openness of responses) and is backed by a different team (xAI vs. OpenAI).

Musk has assembled a small, highly specialized team of researchers (such as Igor Babushkin from DeepMind, Tony Wu from Google Brain and others), with whom he shares the vision rapid and ambitious development – xAI's motto is "move quickly and fix things" (develop quickly and continuously improve everything)

The main mission of xAI is, in Musk's words, "to understand the true nature of the universe" using artificial intelligence

From a practical perspective, xAI wants to create AI that is less constrained, more truthful and its performance will eventually surpass current leaders such as GPT-4 or Google Gemini.

What type of AI model is Grok? Grok is a large language model (LLM) similar classes to GPT models from OpenAI. These are the so-called foundation model – a universal model trained on a huge amount of text (and partly visual) data, which can then be adapted to various tasks. Grok is one of the largest AI models in the world: the first version Grok-1 had 314 billion parameters and used architecture Mixture of Experts

This architecture (see below) allows for more efficient model scaling. The newer versions of Grok-2 and Grok-3 do not disclose the exact number of parameters, but xAI states that Grok-3 was trained with 10x greater computational load than previous top models

2. Technical details and architecture

How does Grok work? From a technical point of view, Grok works on the principle of a neural network of the type transformer trained to complete text. During a conversation, the model generates word-by-word (or token-by-token) responses based on a probabilistic estimate based on the previous context. Grok was first pre-trained (pre-trained) on a huge amount of text data from the Internet and other sources to gain general knowledge about language and the world. It was then fine-tuned to dialogue with the user - probably using a method similar to ChatGPT (i.e. using human feedback and instructions, so-called RLHF). xAI announced that it used reinforcement learning on Grok-3 to improve its ability to chain thought steps for difficult tasks

The classic transformer is consistent, but hits efficiency limits as the model grows larger - in contrast, the MoE architecture allows the number of parameters to scale to hundreds of billions to trillions without a proportional increase in response time or hardware requirements.

DeepSeek from the Chinese startup Zhipu AI is also betting on Mixture-of-Experts: its DeepSeek-V3 model has the stated 671 billion parameters and like Grok, only a part of them are always activated

It can be said that Grok and DeepSeek are technically "cousins" – both represent a new generation of LLMs with MoE architecture, which aims to match (or surpass) the performance of models like GPT-4 at an affordable cost. ChatGPT (GPT-4), on the other hand, has chosen a different path – the exact details of GPT-4 are not public, but it is known that it uses a large dense model (on the order of hundreds of billions of parameters) and was trained with enormous Microsoft computational support. As a result, GPT-4 generally excels in understanding the context and fluency, responses across a wide range of topics while models like Grok and DeepSeek often dominate in technical and mathematical tasks thanks to its specialized architecture

The Grok architecture continues to improve over time. This allowed developers outside of xAI to experiment with the model and potentially contribute improvements. New technologies and approaches: In addition to the MoE architecture already described and the “Think” mode for deeper thinking, xAI deploys several other innovative practices. Another new feature is the already mentioned module DeepSearch, which is nothing more than an advanced web crawler and aggregation algorithm – but xAI presents it as an answer to the “deep research” feature of competitor ChatGPT​

Overall, we can say that xAI is not afraid to deploy new ideas quickly into practice. Musk's team is testing the limits - whether it's extreme model size, a new way reinforced learning, or unconventional integrating AI into a social networkThis keeps Grok a technologically interesting project, often the first to come up with features that competitors offer later. This is a crucial difference - for companies, integrating DeepSeek can mean big cost savings. Moreover, DeepSeek is open source, meaning that anyone can download the model (or versions of it) and run it on their own hardware for free​

Of course, running such a large model requires a powerful server (which an individual usually does not have), so most people will rather use the official application or the cloud. However, openness also brings alternative channels - for example, the community can optimize, reduce or specialize the model and spread it further. From a regional perspective, it is interesting that DeepSeek is oriented towards the global market: its popularity in the US and internationally suggests that the application is not limited to China. In China itself, the operation of such a chatbot also has regulatory obstacles (Beijing issued rules for generative AI in 2023, requiring, among other things, state licenses and censorship measures), but Zhipu AI has reportedly adapted to these rules in order to operate legally. DeepSeek is therefore available almost everywhere (outside of countries where it would be blocked by Western app stores) and its price barrier is very low or zero. This gives it a significant user base - many people have tried it precisely because they didn't have to pay anything or get around restrictions.

Grok (xAI): Grok's availability has evolved gradually. Initially (November 2023), Grok was only accessible a narrow group of testers and soon after, Musk made it available as an exclusive feature for X Premium+ subscribers (highest rate on social network X)​

Shortly after the launch of Grok-3, xAI even made Grok-3 free to all users for a few days (apparently as a demo), but then locked it behind a paywall again.

In the future, the company plans to offer Grok-3 through its own API for enterprises.

In the EU, as mentioned, regulation may play a role – Musk has disputes with EU authorities regarding the content on X and the question is how easily he will promote his chatbot there, which would have to comply with strict guidelines (especially the upcoming AI Act). However, currently (2025) European users can access Grok, although the mobile app may not be in the European App Store right away.

Availability summary: ChatGPT is still most widespread – has over 100 million users and is de facto ubiquitous thanks to its free version. DeepSeek has attracted attention with its rapid rise thanks to free model and openness, but its user base outside of enthusiasts is not yet exactly known (it was a hit on the App Store, but whether it will maintain a mass audience like ChatGPT remains to be seen). Grok started out small, but gradually grew opens up to a wider audience – integration into X potentially gives it access to hundreds of millions of Twitter users. If Musk were to make the full version available for free, he could quickly scale Grok, similar to what he did with ChatGPT. X.AI has so far launched the full API in a limited beta and is mainly focused on integrating Grok into the X ecosystem. It is likely that with further development, Grok will also appear as a standalone web application and developer interface, which will increase its availability.

Openness and "freedom of speech" of models

For users, this means that if they want serious and politically correct answer, ChatGPT will be best; if they want lighthearted and sincere answer with humor, Grok can be interesting; and if they want full control over the model, experimentation or deployment without external constraints, then there is DeepSeek as an open alternative (although with the risk of requiring technical support and oversight of the quality of the outputs). Musk essentially bet that a part of the audience will appreciate AI that speaks "without packaging" as a human in an online discussion – which is certainly true, but it also pushes the boundaries of what society accepts from AI. We can imagine that Grok will not be just a chat bot in the application, but the brain for various solutions - from personal assistants in mobile phones, through smart information search on the X network, to integration into Tesla cars or robots (given Musk's penetration into cars and robotics, connecting AI across his businesses is an option). Although they have not officially confirmed this yet, Musk has indicated that xAI will work closely with Tesla - which would make sense, for example, when using Tesla's Dojo supercomputer, or deploying a language model in the voice assistant in Tesla cars, etc.

In the future, it will be interesting to see whether Musk’s team will manage to fulfill its big goals and possibly move the development of AI towards the desired "universal intelligence".
